Discovery Museum

The Discovery Museum Gold Rush History Center is one of several museums operated under the auspices of a nonprofit organization also in charge of the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center and Challenger Learning Center. The Discovery Museum History Center is a recommended stop in your vacation or journey to Sacramento. While many visit the California State Capitol, Old Sacramento features world class museums displaying artifacts, exhibits and information about California's golden past and Sacramento's growth during the discovery of gold in the mid-1800's.

Challenger Learning Center

Simulated Space Mission

"Each year I see my students' attitudes change after our Challenger mission: they listen better, their math scores improve, and they are more eager to learn. I try to schedule our visit as early as possible! It's a fantastic program, and well worth the effort to come here."

Have you ever wanted to explore space? Do your children dream of being astronauts? Are you looking for an inspirational, interactive field trip for your students? The Challenger Learning Center brings space travel to life right here on Earth.

The Challenger Learning Center is an interactive space mission simulator consisting of a realistic Mission Control and Spacecraft. All three mission scenarios simulate an entire NASA exploration mission from launch to successfully achieving the mission objective.

Your adventure begins when you "launch into space" to search for Comet Halley, embark on a journey to Mars, or prepare for a return trip to the Moon. All participants spend half of the mission time in Mission Control and half in the Spacecraft.

Aboard the Spacecraft you will conduct science experiments, operate robotic arms, build a probe, or navigate toward your destinations. In Mission Control you will record critical science information, monitor the mission status on computers, and communicate with the astronauts. You must be prepared to handle unexpected emergencies during the mission; its success is in your hands!

Challenger programs include School Missions, Community Missions, Corporate Team Building Programs, and Scout Programs.

Sacramento History Musuem

Think about Sacramento's past and the Gold Rush comes to mind. But that's only part of the story. The area's abundant resources sustained native peoples for thousands of years before the onset of European and American settlers. The city and county's vibrant history is full of surprises and contrasts. Riches and scarcity, generosity and greed, violence and beauty all mark Sacramento's early days, a time when its future was by no means certain.

The Sacramento History Museum is a reproduction of the 1854 City Hall and Waterworks. The original building was completed in the spring of 1854 at cost of $120,000.00. It housed the City Waterworks, the Mayor, Council, Marshall, Police, and many other City functions, including the courtroom and the City Jail. The original structure was demolished in 1913 and the new museum opened its doors to the public in 1985. Showcased in natural brick with two stories of 14-foot double-doors across the front, the building looks out on the 1849 Scene of the Old Sacramento State Park.

The Sacramento History Museum's mission is to explore, interpret and display the region's history from the days before the Gold Rush to the present. This diverse, and at times dramatic history unfolds throughout the museums galleries. The museum also offers the perfect starting point for exploring Old Sacramento State Historic Park and for understanding how the area developed and grew to the vibrant community it is today.
